Self-Esteem and Personal Growth

We all experience times when we lack confidence and do not feel good about ourselves.
However, low self-esteem can become a longer-term problem, having harmful effects on our day-to-day lives.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the opinion or perspective we have of ourselves. When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to feel positive about ourselves and about life in general. We are also better prepared to deal with life’s challenges. When our self-esteem is low, we tend to see ourselves from a more negative or critical perspective. We also feel less able to manage the challenges that we encounter in life.

What Causes Low Self-Esteem?

Often, low self-esteem begins in childhood. Our parents, friends, siblings, and even the media send us positive and negative messages about ourselves. We might end up believing that we are not smart enough, thin enough, pretty enough, or athletic enough. The messages that you are not good enough are the ones that stay with you. Maybe, you have found it difficult to live up to other people’s expectations, or to your own expectations. Stress and difficult life events can have a negative effect on self-esteem. Some people are just more prone to negative thinking, while others set impossibly high standards for themselves and then are disappointed when they reach their goals.

How Does Low Self-Esteem Affect Us?

Low self-esteem or confidence can really hold you back in life, you may avoid social situations, stop trying new things, or avoid things you find challenging. In the short term, avoiding challenging and difficult situations might make you feel safe. In the longer term, this just reinforces your underlying doubts and fears and makes them worse. Living with low self-esteem can harm your mental health and lead to problems such as depression and anxiety. You may also develop unhelpful habits, such as smoking, eating or drinking too much, as a way of coping.
